Simple Complications

The day finally came to take Will home from the hospital and I remember Leslie and I becoming more and more nervous due to the fact that this was all new territory for us. Not to mention the fact that Will would go through choking spells that scared the life right out of us. The doctors explained to us that this was completely normal with c-section babies. Normally during that final push through the birth canal a babies lungs will contract causing the "gunk" to be expelled from their lungs which will allow for easy breathing. Well, needless to say Will didn't get to take advantage of this final push. We weren't even completely comfortable with him spending the night with us in the hospital. We were so afraid that we wouldn't wake if he started chocking, and he did literally stop breathing during these episodes. So we took advantage of the fact that the nurses in the nursery could watch him cautiously while we tried to catch up on some much needed sleep. To our relief by the time that we were allowed to leave it seemed that this all had passed but for little coughs. Our main worry now had turned to curing him of his yellow jaundice, which wasn't that severe to start with. The instructions given to us were to simply give him a nice long sun bath. Once at home I cranked up the heat to somewhere around 80 degrees and stripped the boy down. Leslie and I were a sweaty mess but after a few times in the sun and he was cured. -Rob-
