On Friday January 19th, I called my Dr. because I was having a lot of back pain. They suggested I go to the hospital to get checked in case I was experiencing early back labor. After a few hours and many tests, I was sent home because my contractions were so light and 10 to 12 minutes apart.
The next morning, I woke up determined to have the baby. (Anyone who has ever been 9 months pregnant knows exactly how I felt!) I talked Rob into going to the mall to walk around for a while and on the way home we stopped at the drugstore and bought a bottle of castor oil. I drank a couple of teaspoons, (thank goodness I got the tasteless kind!) chased it down with some OJ and waited. A couple of hours later, I started having some pretty strong contractions. I didn't want to jump the gun, go to the hospital and get sent home again, so I took my time, showered and started getting ready. As I was sitting there blow drying my hair and putting on make up, I realized it was the real thing. I was timing my contractions which were now 5 minutes apart and getting really strong. We grabbed my bags (still packed from the night before) and headed to the hospital.
We arrived at Baptist Hospital around 6pm. I was checked into my room and examined to see how far I was dilated and how close my contractions were. I was dilated to 2 and 80% effaced with contractions 3 and 4 minutes apart, so the nurse called my Dr. to see what he wanted to do. We then got the news that I was going to get to stay and have the baby and that my Dr. would come a couple hours later and break my water.
This was FINALLY it! I was in quite a bit of pain from the contractions, but didn't want to get the epidural yet, so the nurse gave me some Demerol, which made me very loopy and drunk for a while. My Dr. came in around 9:30, broke my water and started me on Pitocin which made my contractions become a lot stronger. At around 11pm, I finally gave up the fight and got the epidural. Oh sweet relief! I was much more comfortable at this point, but still wasn't dilating as quickly as the Dr would have liked. Every time they gave me more Pitocin to speed my contractions and help me dilate, Will's heart rate would drop. I also had a bit of a scare when my blood pressure dropped to 80/30. By 5am, I was still only dilated to 5 and the Dr. told us that I would need a c-section since the labor wasn't progressing as it should. I was so scared and nervous, I cried my eyes out not knowing what to expect. They got me into the OR and started the section at 5:54am. At 6:03am, they pulled Will from my womb and I heard my baby's cry for the first time. It was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. They brought him over to see me and he was so quiet and I have never felt love like I did at that instant. Rob was a rock through the whole experience and I couldn't have done it without his love and support. He is such a proud papa! Will is the most beautiful thing in my eyes and weighed in at 7 pounds 4.4 ounces and was 19 inches long. I never knew that I could love someone so deeply and effortlessly. He is just perfect in every way and I am amazed every time I look at him. I could literally sit and stare at him all day. I am so smitten and have never been happier. He is the newest Milner and the love of our lives. I can't wait for the rest!
